Mary C Metty nee Jackson

Image
Mary was born in 1846, Cass, Missouri. On the 28th of October 1869 she and William Metty, youngest son of Leander were married in Louisville, Kansas. On 2 June 1870, we find her listed as residing in household of Keziah Jackson, age 57 born in TN and presumed to be Mary's mother. Also living in the household were the Graham family, James 24, born in NY, Pernicia (Mary's sister), his wife, age 20 born in Missouri and Lewis C age 2 and John 3 months both born in Kansas. William cannot be found in the 1870 census records and we can only speculate as to his whereabouts. From military records it has been established that he enlisted on 10 June 1870 in the field at Fort Shaw, Montana Territory and was assigned to Company I, 13 Regiment of Infantry, U. S. Army. Declaration of recruit indicates he is 24 years of age and has neither wife nor child. We next learn of Mary in the report of her death at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 25 June 1876. She was buried in the National Cemetery at Vick...

Nelly Metty Hoban (2nd)-Oldest Living Metty Passes Away

Image
This is the obituary of my great aunt, Nelly Metty Hoban, previously listed in this blog as the "Oldest Living Metty" descendant. She was actually the second oldest as her older sister, Ethel, was still alive at that time. Nelly passed away this summer, preceded in death--by one week--by her older sister, Ethel. Nelly was 101 years old; her sister, Ethel, was 107. Nelly was the daughter of James Louis and Elizabeth (Holler) Metty, the grand-daughter of Gilbert and Ellen (Laird) Metty, the great grand-daughter of Leander and Mary Ann (Mouton) Metty, and the great-great-grand-daughter of Felix and Catherine (LeMay) Metty. During World War II when her husband enlisted in the Navy, Nelly worked in an ammunitions factory--a true "Rosy the Riveter" girl. At Nelly's 100th birthday party, she offered this advice: "Live each and every day to the fullest, because life is too short to worry or be unhappy".

Francis & Phillis other children

Following his return from the war, Francis and Phillis apparently resumed their lives in Monroe County, Michigan. Their next child was born on 5 December 1867 and they named her Zella. Then followed Serena on 23 April 1869. And their last child was born on 24 November 1871 in Rockwood, Monroe County, Michigan. This child they named Phillip Prosper and as mentioned in an earlier entry, he is the grandfather of Jerry Metty, one of our contributors. By 1894, Frank and his family had removed to Detroit, Michgan and according the Polk Directory, were residing on Charles Street, six homes south of James Avenue. In the 1910 census the family is located in an area described as Ecorse-River Rouge. Frank died on 2 April 1915 at River Rouge and was buried in St Francis Xavier Cemetery, Ecorse, Michigan. Phillis died on 27 November 1916 at 81 Henry Street, River Rouge, Michigan.
