Jacques Mete' Descendants

  The Origin of the Family Name   The current day name METTY, was probably spelled METE' or METAY, when introduced into Canada from France around 1700.   French archivists indicate that the name is probably a derivative of the word “metayer” meaning farmer.   It was during the lifetime of Felix and Richard Metay that the name underwent many changes.  Sometime during the mid-1800’s it reached its present spelling.  During the transition from French to English there were many spellings of the name, such as: Mette, Mettez, Metteze, and Mettier, until it finally reached its present form.  It is also believed that there are many distant relatives who still spell their names in the above ways.

Recently Debra Metty Beveridge wrote to me with this inquiry: Happened across some interesting information when I was looking up something on the Lewis and Clark expedition for our fifth grade curriculum. There was a Jacques Mete who was an interpreter to the Indian tribes during this trip. He's mentioned in their journals and referred to by L & C as "Mr. Metty". I looked up some of the Indian Treaties with the U.S. govt., and he's listed as an interpreter for the govt. for almost every single one! It must be the same Jacques Mete as our grandfather, don't you think? My response: I was delighted to receive your information concerning Jacques Mete. I found your comment about his being mentioned in the L & C journals and referred to as Mr. Metty very intriguing. LaMoine Belle Metty, age 92 of South Padre Island, TX, died Tuesday Oct. 4, 2011 at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX. She was born near East gilead, MI on Dec. 25, 1918 the daughter of the late Earl and Nellie (Stout) Preston. She attended Centreville schools and was married to Dr. Aloys C. Metty on April 21, 1939. They resided in Ann Arbor for many years before retiring to South Texas. LaMoine is survived by 12 children, Beth Metty of Munith, MI, Elaine Metty of Jackson, MI, Ron Metty of Bloomingdale, IL, Tom Metty of Hamburg, MI, Aloys Metty, Jr. of Pinckney, MI, Steve Metty and Theresa Metty both of South Padre Island, TX, Patricia Scott of Kalamazoo, MI, Peter Metty of Ulster Park, NY, John Metty of Parker, CO, Jane Metty of McDonough, GA, and Phillip Metty of Pleasant Valley, NY; 14 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Glema Hochstetler of Nottawa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Kenneth Preston; and a son, Robert....

Melanie, eldest child of Richard and Victoria nee Bissonet Metty, was born 26 Sep 1826 at River Raison, Monroe County, Michigan. She was christened on 10 May 1828 at St. Antoine's. On 7 March 1848 she married John Lauzon at that same place. Their known children include Joseph b. 9 March 1849, Frederic Moses b. 1857, Louis, Daniel and Mary. John died in 1859 at Monroe, Michigan. After John's death, Melanie married James Beaubien born 25 Jan 1821 at St. Antoine's, Monroe, MI. Three children were born of this union; Elizabeth, 29 Apr 1863 at Newport, Moses Alexis 5 October 1868 at Newport and Cyril born 1865. Melanie died 13 Sep 1907.

Joseph T. Metty, son of Louis T. and Madeleine Mary (Allard) Metty, was a fisherman residing in Cheboygan, Michigan in August of 1902. He made his living by fishing and was the victim of an accidental drowning. He was married at the time and father of one daughter named Emily. He was just 22 years of age at the time of death and is buried in Naubinway, Michigan.

Mary Laticia Strong was the daughter of Levi Strong and Annie Couine, born most likely on August 21, 1886 in Michigan. The death certificate lists year of birth as 1887. It also indicates that she was 21 years, 5 months and 6 days old at time of death. Subtracting age from death date of January 31, 1907, yields a birth date of August 21, 1885. The 1900 census finds Mary residing in the household of Sherman Bennett in Nottawa Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan. It describes her as being a servant, 13 years of age, born in August 1886. The marriage registration also gives her birth as August 1886. She was 16 years of age at the time of marriage to George Metty on 5 Apr 1902 in Mendon, Michigan. She died from an over dose of Strychnine.
