The Origin of the Family Name

The current day name METTY, was probably spelled METE' or METAY, when introduced into Canada from France around 1700.  French archivists indicate that the name is probably a derivative of the word “metayer” meaning farmer.

It was during the lifetime of Felix and Richard Metay that the name underwent many changes.  Sometime during the mid-1800’s it reached its present spelling.  During the transition from French to English there were many spellings of the name, such as: Mette, Mettez, Metteze, and Mettier, until it finally reached its present form.  It is also believed that there are many distant relatives who still spell their names in the above ways.
