This posting brings to mind a conversation I had with our Uncle Clair. He recounted his recollection of passing by the cemetery with his father when he a teenager and his father remarking that it had been seven years since your mother had died so it was about time to take some dirt to her grave to fill in the depression. I assume that seven years would be about the length of time it took for the wooden casket to deteriorate and cave in. At that time it would have been left to the family to maintain the gravesite.
