Jacques Mete' Descendants

  I recently posted the marriage license of Arthur Metty and Bertha Wickman.   Now I will turn back the pages of history to 1875.   Arthur was born on 14 November of that year in Kankakee, Illinois.   The family was living on Washington Avenue between Court and Merchants Street.  In the 1880 census the family is shown living in Bourbonnais, Illinois.  By 1884, the family had removed to Lyon County Minnesota along with a number of other families from Kankakee County, Illinois. In June 1884, Arthur’s father purchased a quarter section of land in Murray Township, Murray County, Minnesota approximately one and one half miles southeast of the village of Currie, Minnesota.  The local newspaper states:"He is a member of a company now operating a livestock farm near Marshall."  Then on 12 November 1885 the news reports:  "Mr. F. H. Mette moved his family from near Marshall to Frank Barrows farm just west of this place last week."  Thus Arthur no...

Helen C. (Summers) Metty, 95, of LaVale, passed peacefully from this life Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020. Born Aug. 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. Summers and Margaret (Tribut) Summers. Together with her father, she was raised by cherished grandparents, James O. Summers and Mary Ellen (Noonan) Summers. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard J. Metty; sister, Mary Jo Slaton; brother, Richard Boyden; nephew, Michael Farren; great-nephew, Joseph Stine; and companion, John Borkowski. Helen was a 1944 graduate of the Ursuline Academy and a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, where she achieved the rank of Corporal and was trained as a surgical technician. While serving in the armed forces, she was awarded the American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.  Bertha (Wichmann) and Arthur Prudence Metty, circa 1908-1910.  Married on 18 February 1908 in Billings, Montana.  Witnesses were Marion and Lilly (Metty) Smith.  

 Avoca Miss is Bride of Currie Man on July 7 Miss Rita O'Connell and Clair Metty married in Pretty Church Ceremony A simple but beautiful wedding was solemnized at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Avoca on Tuesday, July 7th, When Miss Rita O'Connell, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connell, of Avoca, became the bride of Clair Metty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Metty of Currie.  Promptly at nine o'clock the wedding party entered the church to the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march played by Miss Mary Ellen Garrison of Slayton. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Genevieve O'Connell.  The groom was attended by Emmet O'Connell, brother of the bride.  The bride was attired in a white suit with a blouse of egg shell lace and wore white accessories to match.   The Origin of the Family Name   The current day name METTY, was probably spelled METE' or METAY, when introduced into Canada from France around 1700.   French archivists indicate that the name is probably a derivative of the word “metayer” meaning farmer.   It was during the lifetime of Felix and Richard Metay that the name underwent many changes.  Sometime during the mid-1800’s it reached its present spelling.  During the transition from French to English there were many spellings of the name, such as: Mette, Mettez, Metteze, and Mettier, until it finally reached its present form.  It is also believed that there are many distant relatives who still spell their names in the above ways.

Funeral service will be Monday, Sept. 18, 1967 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rosary will be Sunday, Sept. 17, 1967, 7:30 p.m. Folsoms' Funeral Chapel. Casket bearers; Paul kopp, Charles Kopp, William J. Kopp, Leonard Herbes, John Mettie, Donald Mettie. Concluding services will be in Olney Cemetery. Folsoms' funeral Chapel in care of arrangments. 

Recently Debra Metty Beveridge wrote to me with this inquiry: Happened across some interesting information when I was looking up something on the Lewis and Clark expedition for our fifth grade curriculum. There was a Jacques Mete who was an interpreter to the Indian tribes during this trip. He's mentioned in their journals and referred to by L & C as "Mr. Metty". I looked up some of the Indian Treaties with the U.S. govt., and he's listed as an interpreter for the govt. for almost every single one! It must be the same Jacques Mete as our grandfather, don't you think? My response: I was delighted to receive your information concerning Jacques Mete. I found your comment about his being mentioned in the L & C journals and referred to as Mr. Metty very intriguing. I tried searching the journal online and was unsuccessful in finding any references to Jacques. However, this Jacques cannot be our immediate ancestor, although I do believe that he is related.
