Helen C. (Summers) Metty, 95, of LaVale, passed peacefully from this life Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020.
Born Aug. 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. Summers and Margaret (Tribut) Summers. Together with her father, she was raised by cherished grandparents, James O. Summers and Mary Ellen (Noonan) Summers.
Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard J. Metty; sister, Mary Jo Slaton; brother, Richard Boyden; nephew, Michael Farren; great-nephew, Joseph Stine; and companion, John Borkowski.
Helen was a 1944 graduate of the Ursuline Academy and a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, where she achieved the rank of Corporal and was trained as a surgical technician. While serving in the armed forces, she was awarded the American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
After retiring from nursing services at the former Memorial Hospital with 17 years of service, Helen served as a home health aide for several years.
Helen was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and Our Lady of the Mountains Roman Catholic Parish.
Surviving are Helen's children, Randall J. Metty, Patrick J. Metty and wife, Vicky, of Cumberland, and Debra Beveridge and husband, Russell, of Connecticut. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brian and Natasha Metty and Matthew Beveridge; nieces, Lynn Stine, Mary Ellen Marlow, and Margie Jefferies; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
Helen was a loving, caring, and compassionate mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. We will miss her deeply and hold her cherished memory in our hearts forever.
Due to the pandemic and ongoing health concerns for the public, services and burial will be private and at the discretion of the family.
Burial will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, with military honors accorded by Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
