Jacques Mete' Descendants

Philip was the grandson of Daisy Metty, wife of Frank Bellmore. Houston Chronicle, September 27, 2001: An engineer working on a propulsion system for a model rocket died after an explosion at his home. Phillip E. Bellmore, 42, was working on the rocket in his back yard Tuesday evening when it exploded, said city Fire Marshal Wanda Martin. He was hit in the back by fragments, she said, and flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital but died that night during surgery. Martin said the explosion damaged the back of Bellmore's home and two neighbors' homes.  

Michael Raymond Metty, born in Michigan in 1962 joined the U. S. Navy in 1980 and after retirement from the Navy made his home the St Mary's/Kingsland Georgia area.  He died on 28 January 2013 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Mary's, Georgia.  

  It is not known when Jacques, our French ancestor arrived on the North American continent, but the earliest written record I have discovered thus far has been his marriage in 1730 in the village of Boucherville. Boucherville was founded as a  seigneurial  parish in 1667 by  Pierre Boucher , for whom the city was later named. Pierre Boucher came from  Mortagne-au-Perche ,  Normandy , France. After having lived in  Quebec City  and  Trois-Rivières , Boucher moved to the Percées Islands by the southern shores of  Saint Lawrence River , where he founded Boucherville. Pierre Boucher begins farming but does not receive his seigneury until 1672 when he builds a palisade to protect the community from the Iroquois The seigniory, lies on the south side of the St. Lawrence Rivern and was in the county of Chambly; bounded W. by the fief Tremblay, E. by the seigniory of Varennes and by Montarville in the rear. 114 arpents in front by two leagues...

  Many of you have probably at sometime noted in the movie credits the name of the cinematographer listed as Russell Metty.   Then the question arises, is he related to our family.   And the answer to that question is definitely, YES.   Below is a picture furnished by my nephew Rusty Metty of the Pacific Northwest.   The lady in the picture is Loretta Young and she is speaking to Russell Metty. “The Perfect Marriage” was a Hal Wallis production released February 24, 1947 by Paramount Pictures.  It starred Loretta Young, David Niven, Eddie Albert, Charlie Ruggles, Virginia Field and Rita Johnson.  In the picture Loretta Young is seen bidding good morning  to her cameraman, Russell Metty, one of Hollywood’s ace lensers.  The roving cameraman follows her through her work hours on the set for this film.   The occasion was the celebration of the founding of Detroit. Below is the invitation I received to attend the ceremonies commemorating the landing of Cadillac.

  I recently posted the marriage license of Arthur Metty and Bertha Wickman.   Now I will turn back the pages of history to 1875.   Arthur was born on 14 November of that year in Kankakee, Illinois.   The family was living on Washington Avenue between Court and Merchants Street.  In the 1880 census the family is shown living in Bourbonnais, Illinois.  By 1884, the family had removed to Lyon County Minnesota along with a number of other families from Kankakee County, Illinois. In June 1884, Arthur’s father purchased a quarter section of land in Murray Township, Murray County, Minnesota approximately one and one half miles southeast of the village of Currie, Minnesota.  The local newspaper states:"He is a member of a company now operating a livestock farm near Marshall."  Then on 12 November 1885 the news reports:  "Mr. F. Helen C. (Summers) Metty, 95, of LaVale, passed peacefully from this life Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020. Born Aug. 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. Summers and Margaret (Tribut) Summers. Together with her father, she was raised by cherished grandparents, James O. Summers and Mary Ellen (Noonan) Summers. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard J. Metty; sister, Mary Jo Slaton; brother, Richard Boyden; nephew, Michael Farren; great-nephew, Joseph Stine; and companion, John Borkowski. Helen was a 1944 graduate of the Ursuline Academy and a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, where she achieved the rank of Corporal and was trained as a surgical technician. While serving in the armed forces, she was awarded the American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.  Avoca Miss is Bride of Currie Man on July 7 Miss Rita O'Connell and Clair Metty married in Pretty Church Ceremony A simple but beautiful wedding was solemnized at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Avoca on Tuesday, July 7th, When Miss Rita O'Connell, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connell, of Avoca, became the bride of Clair Metty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Metty of Currie.  Promptly at nine o'clock the wedding party entered the church to the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march played by Miss Mary Ellen Garrison of Slayton.   The Origin of the Family Name   The current day name METTY, was probably spelled METE' or METAY, when introduced into Canada from France around 1700.   French archivists indicate that the name is probably a derivative of the word “metayer” meaning farmer.   It was during the lifetime of Felix and Richard Metay that the name underwent many changes.  Sometime during the mid-1800’s it reached its present spelling.  During the transition from French to English there were many spellings of the name, such as: Mette, Mettez, Metteze, and Mettier, until it finally reached its present form.  It is also believed that there are many distant relatives who still spell their names in the above ways.

Recently Debra Metty Beveridge wrote to me with this inquiry: Happened across some interesting information when I was looking up something on the Lewis and Clark expedition for our fifth grade curriculum. There was a Jacques Mete who was an interpreter to the Indian tribes during this trip. He's mentioned in their journals and referred to by L & C as "Mr. Metty". I looked up some of the Indian Treaties with the U.S. govt., and he's listed as an interpreter for the govt. for almost every single one! It must be the same Jacques Mete as our grandfather, don't you think? My response: I was delighted to receive your information concerning Jacques Mete. I found your comment about his being mentioned in the L & C journals and referred to as Mr. Metty very intriguing. LaMoine Belle Metty, age 92 of South Padre Island, TX, died Tuesday Oct. 4, 2011 at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX. She was born near East gilead, MI on Dec. 25, 1918 the daughter of the late Earl and Nellie (Stout) Preston. She attended Centreville schools and was married to Dr. Aloys C. Metty on April 21, 1939. They resided in Ann Arbor for many years before retiring to South Texas. LaMoine is survived by 12 children, Beth Metty of Munith, MI, Elaine Metty of Jackson, MI, Ron Metty of Bloomingdale, IL, Tom Metty of Hamburg, MI, Aloys Metty, Jr. of Pinckney, MI, Steve Metty and Theresa Metty both of South Padre Island, TX, Patricia Scott of Kalamazoo, MI, Peter Metty of Ulster Park, NY, John Metty of Parker, CO, Jane Metty of McDonough, GA, and Phillip Metty of Pleasant Valley, NY; 14 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Glema Hochstetler of Nottawa. Melanie, eldest child of Richard and Victoria nee Bissonet Metty, was born 26 Sep 1826 at River Raison, Monroe County, Michigan. She was christened on 10 May 1828 at St. Antoine's. On 7 March 1848 she married John Lauzon at that same place. Their known children include Joseph b. 9 March 1849, Frederic Moses b. 1857, Louis, Daniel and Mary. John died in 1859 at Monroe, Michigan. After John's death, Melanie married James Beaubien born 25 Jan 1821 at St. Antoine's, Monroe, MI. Three children were born of this union; Elizabeth, 29 Apr 1863 at Newport, Moses Alexis 5 October 1868 at Newport and Cyril born 1865. Melanie died 13 Sep 1907.

Joseph T. Metty, son of Louis T. and Madeleine Mary (Allard) Metty, was a fisherman residing in Cheboygan, Michigan in August of 1902. He made his living by fishing and was the victim of an accidental drowning. He was married at the time and father of one daughter named Emily. He was just 22 years of age at the time of death and is buried in Naubinway, Michigan.

Mary Laticia Strong was the daughter of Levi Strong and Annie Couine, born most likely on August 21, 1886 in Michigan. The death certificate lists year of birth as 1887. It also indicates that she was 21 years, 5 months and 6 days old at time of death. Subtracting age from death date of January 31, 1907, yields a birth date of August 21, 1885. The 1900 census finds Mary residing in the household of Sherman Bennett in Nottawa Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan. It describes her as being a servant, 13 years of age, born in August 1886. The marriage registration also gives her birth as August 1886. She was 16 years of age at the time of marriage to George Metty on 5 Apr 1902 in Mendon, Michigan. She died from an over dose of Strychnine.

Bernard, son of Oliver and Deliah, was born in Monroe, Michigan; died in Detroit, and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Oliver, sixth child of Richard and Victoria Bissonnet Metty, he was born 19 Sep 1836 at St Antoine, River Raisin, Monroe County, Michigan. On 19 Oct 1863 he married Deliah Dequindre. They were both listed as being from Frenchtown and the ceremony was performed by the Reverend Edward Joos. To this union was born 10 children.
