Mary C Metty nee Jackson

Image
Mary was born in 1846, Cass, Missouri. On the 28th of October 1869 she and William Metty, youngest son of Leander were married in Louisville, Kansas. On 2 June 1870, we find her listed as residing in household of Keziah Jackson, age 57 born in TN and presumed to be Mary's mother. Also living in the household were the Graham family, James 24, born in NY, Pernicia (Mary's sister), his wife, age 20 born in Missouri and Lewis C age 2 and John 3 months both born in Kansas. William cannot be found in the 1870 census records and we can only speculate as to his whereabouts. From military records it has been established that he enlisted on 10 June 1870 in the field at Fort Shaw, Montana Territory and was assigned to Company I, 13 Regiment of Infantry, U. S. Army. Declaration of recruit indicates he is 24 years of age and has neither wife nor child. We next learn of Mary in the report of her death at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 25 June 1876. She was buried in the National Cemetery at Vick...

Nelly Metty Hoban (2nd)-Oldest Living Metty Passes Away

Image
This is the obituary of my great aunt, Nelly Metty Hoban, previously listed in this blog as the "Oldest Living Metty" descendant. She was actually the second oldest as her older sister, Ethel, was still alive at that time. Nelly passed away this summer, preceded in death--by one week--by her older sister, Ethel. Nelly was 101 years old; her sister, Ethel, was 107. Nelly was the daughter of James Louis and Elizabeth (Holler) Metty, the grand-daughter of Gilbert and Ellen (Laird) Metty, the great grand-daughter of Leander and Mary Ann (Mouton) Metty, and the great-great-grand-daughter of Felix and Catherine (LeMay) Metty. During World War II when her husband enlisted in the Navy, Nelly worked in an ammunitions factory--a true "Rosy the Riveter" girl. At Nelly's 100th birthday party, she offered this advice: "Live each and every day to the fullest, because life is too short to worry or be unhappy".

Francis & Phillis other children

Following his return from the war, Francis and Phillis apparently resumed their lives in Monroe County, Michigan. Their next child was born on 5 December 1867 and they named her Zella. Then followed Serena on 23 April 1869. And their last child was born on 24 November 1871 in Rockwood, Monroe County, Michigan. This child they named Phillip Prosper and as mentioned in an earlier entry, he is the grandfather of Jerry Metty, one of our contributors. By 1894, Frank and his family had removed to Detroit, Michgan and according the Polk Directory, were residing on Charles Street, six homes south of James Avenue. In the 1910 census the family is located in an area described as Ecorse-River Rouge. Frank died on 2 April 1915 at River Rouge and was buried in St Francis Xavier Cemetery, Ecorse, Michigan. Phillis died on 27 November 1916 at 81 Henry Street, River Rouge, Michigan.

Francis takes a wife

As reported earlier, Francis (Frank) was born on 31 August 1834, the son of Richard and Victoria (Bissonnet) Metty. He was still living in the household of his father at the time of the 1860 census, but was to marry shortly thereafter. He found his bride to be right in his father's household. On 5 February 1856, Richard had married for the third time and his new wife, Rachel Knaggs Digue, had a daughter Phillis, born in March 1837. The father was Thomas Diguier dit Courtois. Phillis and Francis married on 22 January 1861 at Sable River, Monroe County, Michigan. The years before Frank went off to war, were probably very difficult for the young couple. According to information I have located, particularly relating to St Antoine's Cemetery, their first child was born in 1861 and died 16 January 1864. The child was buried in St Antoine's Cemetery. Their next child was born in October 1862 and named Richard Stanley. This child died on 27 February 1863 and is also buried in St. A...

Veterans Problems of the Past

Francis (Frank) Metty was born 31 August 1834 at St Antoine, River Raisin, Monroe County, Michigan. He was the son of Richard and grandson of our common ancestor, Felix. He died on 2 April 1915 at River Rouge, Wayne County, Michigan. On 2 February 1865 he enlisted as a Pvt Co D Reorganized 11th Michigan Infantry. Frank was described at time of enlistment as being 5'5", light complexion, gray/black hair and blue eyes. He was discharged on 16 September 1865 at Nashville, TN. Among the documents in his pension file is an affidavit of a comrade in arms, which gives insight into the life of a soldier during the Civil War. It reads as follows: “That while we served together in said Company we were frequently on duty together and some of the time we were engaged in train guard service accompanying United States Military Railway trains running between Chattanooga and Knoxville, in the State of Tennessee.: “That on or about the 20th day of April 1865, in Camp at Chattanooga, Tennessee,...

Frank Metty's Pension Application

Image
For anyone who has never checked pension files, they can prove to be valuable sources of information. This is an example of one of the items generally found in the file. In this case it was filed on 29 December 1898 and in it is information relative to the claimant's marriage and the birth of some of his children. Sometimes the information can be amusing as well. For instance question #3 on the form asks: What record of marriage exists? Here our ancestor proudly responds: "record is good." I do not believe that is really the answer the government was expecting?

Williams second wife

The Monroe Evening News, Tuesday, 22 December 1925 Mrs. Celestine Metty, 71, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Edward Dubois, East Elm Avenue, at five o'clock this morning, following an illness of two weeks. She leaves a daughter in Grand Rapds. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's church, Thursday morning at 8:30 o'clock. Note: The daughter is presumed to be Gertrude Metty, born 30 August 1895 in Detroit, Michigan. I have never been able to learn anymore about Gertrude. Several years ago, my wife and I visited the cemetery in Monroe, where Celestine is buried, but could find no grave for William. I can only assume that he died in Detroit and is buried there.

William leaves his wife behind

Image
This is copy of William Metty's enlistment in the 13th Infantry on June 10, 1870. The enlistment took place "in the field" near Fort Shaw, Montana Territory. He is described as being 24 years of age, and a carpenter by occupation. Of greater interest is the second part of his enlistment contract shown below wherein he signs the Declaration of Recruit which reads as follows: I, William Metty desiring to ENLIST in the Army of the United States, for the term of FIVE YEARS, Do declare, That I am twenty four years and --- months of age, that I have neither wife nor child; that I have never been discharged from the United States service on account of disability, or by sentence of a court martial, or by order before the expiration of the term of enlistment; and I know of no impediment to my serving honestly and faithfully as a soldier for five years. Eldred Metty and brothers

Image
This is a photo taken in the 1940's or 1950's of my dad, Eldred Metty, with his brothers Clare and Thorald, along with his brothers-in-law Joe Labadie (Madonna Metty), Jerry Graham (Beata Metty), and Fritz Kramer (Caritas Metty). They bring to my mind images of the Purple Gang, active in the Detroit area in the 1920's. Ironically, my grandfather, Dosotheus Metty (Metay) was almost a victim of the Purple Gang. My grandfather had a thriving dry cleaning business in Detroit and the Purple Gang attempted to extort protection money from him. When he refused to pay, they bombed the family home ~~ only they got the wrong house. Unfortunately, a house about three doors from the Metty home was bombed instead. Thankfully, I never heard of any injuries.

This picture dates from about 1920 or 1921 a shows two young lads setting off for school. J.R. on the left is my father Arthur J. Metty Jr, and on the right is his brother Clair Thomas Metty. They would have been about 9 and 7 years of age. They lived approximately two miles from the country school and this was their usual mode of transportation. It was either this or walk. Must have been a little cool on mornings similar to the one pictured here. Would like to see or learn how your parents and grandparents traveled to school.

Leander second child of Felix & Catherine

The second child of Felix and Catherine Metty was another son, and this one they named Leander. He was born on 14 March 1798 in Detroit. The first written record of Leander that I have discovered was in Volume XI of the Michigan Territorial papers, wherein on page 194 is recorded a transcript of the Registers of Ballots of the Election of the town and county of Monroe in the Territory of Michigan taken at the election held the 6th of September 1821. Leander Mettez is recorded as one of the electors. Next on 4 September 1823, on page 469 one finds Election at Council House in Detroit for delegate to Congress and for Legislative Council for Territory of Michigan. Among voters listed are: Antoine Mettez, Bazzeil Mettez, Charles Mettez (with the notaiton "rejected"), Francis Mettez, Leon Mettez, Rene Mettez and Theophilus Mettez. I believe that the listing for Leon is actually Leander. By 10 January 1825, the French Families of the Detroit River Region, places Leander at St Antoi...
